Frequently asked questions
Does the DEFIANT™ record continuously?
Yes — 24 hours a day, in real time, on vibration and on every other parameter it is wired to. It is not a scheduled collector that wakes, measures and sleeps: the channels are always recording, which is what lets you go back to any moment after the fact. It can also raise an alarm immediately when a configured level is crossed.
Do the channels record simultaneously or multiplexed?
Simultaneously — all 8 or all 16. That is the reason you can compare phase between them, which a multiplexed system cannot give you: phase only means something when the channels were sampled at the same instant.
How fast does it raise an alarm?
In under 100 ms. That is fast enough to trip a machine shutdown rather than only to notify someone, which is why the DEFIANT™ is used on assets where the response has to happen before a person can read a screen.
What sensors can I connect?
Most installations use ICP/IEPE accelerometers and proximity probes, but it accepts practically any sensor with a voltage or analog output. That includes instruments you already own, so an existing measurement point does not have to be replaced to join the system.
How fast does it sample?
96 kHz per channel, on all 8 or 16 channels at the same time — the highest sampling rate in the Erbessd catalogue, and roughly three times what a wireless sensor delivers. That is what carries the usable frequency range up to 25,000 Hz, and what lets a transient be reconstructed instead of averaged away.
What is the dynamic range?
−20 to +20 V. The accuracy you get within that range depends on the sensors you connect, not on the acquisition system.
Can I connect a 4–20 mA sensor?
Yes. The DEFIANT™ has analog ports for low sample-rate signals. You can also bring them in wirelessly with PHANTOM® general purpose modules reporting to the DEFIANT™, which is usually cheaper for points that are far from the cabinet.
If I connect two displacement sensors, can I see orbits?
Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. Two proximity probes at 90° give you the shaft orbit and eccentricity, which is the standard way to watch sleeve-bearing machines.
Can I see the live signal, like an oscilloscope?
Yes. The DEFIANT™ streams in real time and the software shows the waveform and the spectrum while the machine is running.
Can I record a complete startup?
Yes, and it is one of its best uses. Because it records continuously, the startup is captured whole — no one has to be there with a collector at the right second. Afterwards you analyse it frame by frame, with its run-up curve.
Can I run ODS in real time?
Yes. Live ODS monitoring redraws the machine’s deformation capture by capture while it operates, and it keeps a history you can rewind: pick any earlier moment and see how the machine was deforming then.
Is the DEFIANT™ also a gateway?
Yes, for PHANTOM® sensors. The point is to combine continuous monitoring with the wireless data, which also expands the channel count enormously — the wired channels stay dedicated to what needs high sample rates.
How many PHANTOM® sensors can it receive while recording its wired channels?
There is no limit from the DEFIANT™ itself, because it works as a gateway. No separate gateway is needed: the PHANTOM® sensors connect straight to it, and the practical limit is how many fit within its wireless range.
The wireless channels do not compete with the 8 or 16 wired ones — they are additional. The wired channels keep recording continuously, and the PHANTOM® sensors add variables that enrich the trend for far less money. For quantities that do not need a high sample rate, such as temperature or current, wireless is the sensible choice.
Where is the data stored?
On the DEFIANT™’s internal SSD, which records permanently, 24 hours a day. It also sends samples to EI-Analytic™, the same way a PHANTOM® does. As a gateway it stores the wireless data internally as well, or forwards it to the cloud.
How do I access the data?
By connecting to the DEFIANT™ over your local network or remotely. What you see when you connect is the software running inside the unit itself — there is nothing to install to look at it.
How do I extract the vibration data?
Connect to the DEFIANT™ over the local network or the internet, and download from inside its software. The files are compatible with EI-Analytic™, Digivibe MX® and WiserVibe, so the data moves between tools without a conversion step.
Can I connect through the cloud?
Yes — over the local network or through the cloud, whichever suits the site.
Are the settings local, or can they be made from the cloud?
Both.
Do I need any additional software?
No, it is not required. It is worth having an EI-Analytic™ account — which is free — so the DEFIANT™ can push data to the cloud and you can see it from a computer or a phone.
Can it send data to EI-Analytic™?
Yes, as often as you want, for vibration or any other parameter. That is what lets PHANTOM®, WiserVibe, Digivibe MX® and EI-Analytic™ work as one system instead of four.
Does it connect to other systems?
Yes: Modbus, OPC and MQTT. Those are the same standards your SCADA and historian already speak, so machine data can reach the screens your operators already watch.
Does the DEFIANT™ need a power backup?
Yes, and it goes separately: there is no internal battery. It is a continuously recording device connected to mains, so where continuity matters you plan a UPS alongside the unit, exactly as you would for the server or the switch.
When power returns the DEFIANT™ restarts on its own and resumes its scheduled tasks — nobody has to walk to the cabinet to start it.
Is the DEFIANT™ for critical machinery?
It was designed for it: round-the-clock watch, alarms and instant machine shutdowns.
That said, its price was set so it can also be used on non-critical machinery — the case where continuous recording is useful but nobody would have justified a traditional protection system.
